CWT Journal – August 19, 2026 / The Holy Grail, Valencia

Hallelujah—we have air conditioning! And not just one unit, but three. After spending last night lying on top of the sheets, slowly dehydrating like beef jerky, our new apartment felt like paradise.

After a brief sojourn from the heat, we headed into Old Town to visit the magnificent Valencia Cathedral, home to what may be the most famous cup in history: the Holy Grail. Known as the Holy Chalice of Valencia, tradition holds that its ancient agate cup is the vessel Jesus used at the Last Supper. The chalice has been in Valencia since the 15th century, and while no one can prove it belonged to Jesus, archaeological study dates the cup itself to roughly the 1st century BC–1st century AD and traces its style to the eastern Mediterranean—meaning, remarkably, it is at least from the right part of the world and the right era. Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI have both celebrated Mass using it.

Having checked “see the Holy Grail” off our increasingly bizarre CWT bucket list, we headed home for desperately needed showers. Mom cooked an amazing chicken, artichoke, and sun-dried tomato dinner before we ventured down to the port to catch the sunset.

We missed it.

So it was back home for an episode of The Rings of Power and bed—in a gloriously, wonderfully, beautifully air-conditioned room.

Sometimes the Holy Grail isn't an ancient chalice. Sometimes it's a thermostat set to 18°C.
