ECLIPSE DAY!

We headed into Zaragoza for a nice lunch, then returned to the villa to pack a picnic and refreshments for the big event. We drove into the Spanish countryside and climbed to an exposed ridgeline with a spectacular view of the western sky, setting up beneath a massive wind turbine.

For nearly an hour, we watched the Moon slowly creep across the Sun. Then, at around 8:30 p.m., totality. For about 1½ incredible minutes, the Moon lined up perfectly with the Sun, revealing its glowing corona as daylight suddenly faded into an eerie dusk.

It was absolutely mind-blowing—easily one of the coolest things the Coleman family has ever witnessed. In that brief minute and a half, we completely understood why people travel to the ends of the Earth chasing eclipses. We may have just become eclipse chasers ourselves.

Our view of totality even came with an “engagement ring”—a tiny, brilliant pink sparkle glowing near the 9 o’clock edge of the blackened Sun. It was likely a solar prominence, glowing red-pink hydrogen gas extending beyond the Moon’s silhouette, and it made an already surreal sight even more spectacular.

Then it was back to the villa for another late Spanish dinner, plenty of wine, and one final sobremesa with our new friends.
