CWT Journal – August 11, 2026 / Fuendetodos

This morning we said au revoir to Nice and flew to Barcelona. Everything was going suspiciously smoothly…until we picked up the rental car. Despite having our own coverage, we somehow ended up with a €350 insurance charge after their machine mysteriously refused an €1,800 security deposit on every one of Dad's high-limit credit cards. Even the credit card company said they never received the charge attempt. Our first CWT scam? Sure felt like it!

But alas, “Money comes and goes, but memories last forever.” So we hit the road.

We drove to Fuendetodos, the tiny Spanish village where Francisco Goya was born in 1746. Goya became one of Spain's greatest artists, famous for everything from royal portraits to dark, haunting works depicting war and human nature.

There we moved into an absolutely palatial villa with Carrie and Keith Wood and their wonderful friends John and Alex, and Laurie and Emily. We settled into Spanish life immediately with dinner at 11 p.m., plenty of wine, and a long sobremesa—the wonderful Spanish tradition of lingering around the table after a meal simply to talk and enjoy each other's company.

Much of the conversation centered on what we'd all traveled here to see.
